About Progressive Matter

Publishing technology
in service of scholarship.

We develop software and provide technical support to address practical problems in academic publishing. Our focus is on smaller publishers, independent journals and conferences.

Strong publishing systems should be the standard.

Running a journal takes more than editorial expertise. Websites, manuscript systems and publication workflows require technical knowledge and ongoing maintenance. Smaller publishing teams may have limited time, funding or specialist support for that work.

We want independent publishing teams to have effective technology without needing the resources of a large publisher. We build focused software and help journals and conferences set up, maintain and improve their publishing workflows.

Scholar-friendly by purpose.

Publishing technology should benefit the people doing the work: editorial teams, reviewers and authors, as well as the readers who use published research.

We aim to reduce unnecessary technical work, make research easier to access and support publishing decisions guided by scholarly needs. We are building a sustainable commercial company around that purpose.

Founded from research experience.

Progressive Matter was founded by Thomas Wolgast, a researcher with a background in computer science and experience in scientific publishing and conference organization. The company grew from his conviction that academic publishing can work better, and that practical software can contribute to that change.
