</sec>Why publish beyond PDF?
PDF is excellent for print-ready documents and consistent page layouts. However, its fixed layout can limit accessibility, adaptable reading and machine-readability.
HTML and XML give the same research additional ways to be read, processed and preserved. Authors can continue using their preferred writing tools, whether it is Word, LaTex, or any other writing tool.
What the formats enable
Make articles easier to navigate and read across different screens. Structured HTML supports assistive technologies, adjustable presentation and direct links to sections and references.
We enrich the HTML with a navigable table of contents, interactive citations and smart abbreviation introductions to make the document as accessible as possible without additional work for editors or authors.
Represent article content and metadata in a machine-readable format built for scholarly publishing. JATS XML provides a shared foundation for publishing workflows, long-term archiving and reuse across systems.
PubMed Central requires full-text XML and prefers JATS. Providing structured content prepares your articles for the technical workflows of scholarly repositories; each repository has its own submission and quality requirements.
We plan to expand beyond HTML and JATS XML with additional outputs, including BITS, TEI and e-book formats. These formats are planned for future development and are not yet available.
